Variational AI approached me to create an identity for his new start-up variational. The main goal of the process was to come up with a forward thinking identity that would embrace ideas sourced from the AI technology.

Variational’s technology is based around feeding a matrix of data into an encoder which then reduces the probability of results into a set of statistical certainties. The process visually fits the pattern of a sine wave. Initial sketches proved to be steps in the right direction, however the results were very raw. It also became apparent through sketches that the V of the name would also work it’s way into the shapes.
The final version of the logo is influenced by the initial sketches, but ends up defining a unique identity, combining the final ‘AI’ into the logotype.
Colours were based on communicating Variational.ai is a cutting edge technological powerhouse. A note on typography. Using classic fonts is always a pleasure and deploying Bank Gothic was no-different here. Simply an amazing font. Thank you Morris Fuller Benton for an outstanding design piece.
